Herbs & Kettles has always forged ahead with our chaiwala animals by our side - beautiful and often endangered creatures from India that make it a wildly diverse and unique country. When it comes to philanthropy, animal conservation in India is our first priority.

Our chaiwalas gathered, conferred, and discussed what cause to support. In the end, they turned to the littlest and possibly cutest one of them all - the Red Panda.

The Red Panda population has declined by 50 percent over the past 18 years and is only set to worsen. In India, there are an estimated 5000 red pandas that still remain, with the Singalila National Park in Darjeeling being a major wild habitat for them. This adorable but highly-trafficked animal is becoming even more endangered, despite efforts like conservation breeding programs.

The chaiwala panda reaches out, asking for help against those who want to capture it for its beautiful red pelt.

We saw the good work of the Prameya Foundation in support of animal conservation and collaborated with them to start the Red Panda Conservation Initiative.

Poorvi Chordia - Red Panda Conservation Initiative

To begin: Spreading awareness

In collaboration with law enforcement agencies and local communities, we will spread awareness about the dangers posed by poaching and trafficking to the Red Panda. This includes awareness workshops for villagers and the distribution of information about anti-trafficking to a wide section of the forest and village population.

Next steps: Collecting data

We will conduct a detailed presence-absence wildlife survey in the Singalila region to devise an effective species conservation management strategy. This includes workshops to augment the skills and knowledge of forest guards, local journalists, trek guides, and others; covering anti-poaching investigation, patrolling techniques, and wildlife laws.

And finally: Habitat restoration

Currently, there is no organized support for conserving the habitat of these animals in the Singalila National Park. Prameya Foundation along with Herbs & Kettles are launching The Red Panda Initiative in that direction. Together, we will work to connect Red Panda corridors within the park to bolster other conservation programs in place and to provide these creatures with a safe and lush environment to breed and flourish.

A smile spreads over the Red Panda’s distinctive face, as its friends and supporters from the Prameya Foundation and H&K family gather around it.
