Savor the Essence of Nature: The Emerald Green Tea from Kurseong Valley, Darjeeling

This first flush loose leaf green tea from Kurseong Valley in Darjeeling is an exceptional quality green tea made in small artisanal batches. We chose Darjeeling green tea leaves because of their delectable umami taste. It is very soothing, with lovely buttery, vegetal, and nutty flavors reminiscent of spinach, green beans, and edamame, with an earthy undertone of pine wood.

The Emerald Green Tea is a loose leaf tea composed of two leaves or a single leaf, and a bud. After careful hand plucking, the tea leaves are allowed to rest to develop rich flavors, and then this is followed by steaming, drying, and lightly rolling the tea. This well-thought-out and tedious manufacturing process gives one of the finest Indian Darjeeling green teas that we have enjoyed.

The Emerald Green Tea blend, is made during the spring season from special Japanese bushes. The bushes are covered in natural shade, which helps pull theanine and other amino acids from the soil into the young tender leaves. The buds, thereby developing the marvelous umami taste. L-theanine is an amino acid analogue that decreases anxiety, stress and helps create a “focused calm” in conjunction with the caffeine present in tea. Like all green teas, the Darjeeling green tea leaves undergo fixation after plucking to prevent oxidation of the catechin polyphenols into flavin polyphenols. Therefore, this Emerald tea has high levels of the polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a natural antioxidant.

Dry leaves

The Dry leaves of the Darjeeling green tea are lightly rolled, olive-colored whole leaves with two leaves and a bud. Vegetal with aromas of spinach and some citrus.

Wet leaves

Beautiful sage colored whole leaves which expand to take up a lot of volume. Remarkable aromas of butter, spinach, and pine wood enthrall the senses.

Tea liquor

Transparent with a pale yellow color and sweet, buttery, and vegetal aromas. The Emerald green tea has a rich mouthfeel and is medium-bodied, with a mineral texture, minimal astringency, and a lasting aftertaste. It has a delectable umami taste, some sweetness, and a slightly sour and bitter taste, which is almost unnoticed. Pronounced buttery, seaweed, vegetal, and nutty flavors reminiscent of spinach, green beans, and edamame are felt throughout with an earthy undertone of pine wood.

Great taste and beautiful packaging

Was introduced to Herbs & Kettle by a friend and now I am a loyal customer. The Masala Chai is so fragrant and flavorful. We also ordered various sample bags and they send you enough product for multiple tastings. I really appreciated this as I’m new to teas and am able to really get a feel for what I like. The packaging is gorgeous and very professional. I like the personal connection the owners have to the product and transparency of their process.

Good teas

I have read a newspaper article about the company in Atlanta. Christmas was coming and my nephew likes teas, so I ordered online. I can support local stores/companies this way, too. It arrived as promised and the customer service was pretty good. I got a sample tea bag myself, and I liked it. One thing I wish is the price. If it were cheaper, I could order more often.

Tea-riffic Q&A Sips

Darjeeling is in the foothills of the Himalayas and so on high altitude. With cloud cover, mist and its own microclimate the green tea produced in Darjeeling is rich in theanine that gives a wonderful broth like texture and umami taste. Theanine also reduces acute stress and anxiety, thereby enhancing calm.

Yes you can drink Darjeeling green tea everyday. It’s rich in antioxidants, has amazing health benefits and excellent flavors.

An Emerald green tea latte is likely to have a creamier and milder taste compared to traditional Darjeeling green tea. The addition of milk in the latte can impart a smooth and slightly sweet flavor and the notes of the tea might take a backseat. Traditional Darjeeling green tea, when consumed without milk, tends to have a more pronounced vegetal flavor.

Darjeeling green teas are in high altitude and so difficult to pluck and process with a growing season of mine months with the best green teas being made in early to late spring and in some farms in the summer. Our teas are all artisanal that means made by hand and whole leafs teas, not broken teas.

We recommend storing the tea in an air tight tin in a cool dry place.

Darjeeling green tea typically contains less caffeine compared to Darjeeling black tea. On average, a cup of Darjeeling green tea may have around 20-30 milligrams of caffeine. As with any tea, factors such as steeping time and water temperature can affect the final caffeine content.
